Keeping your household under control is not an easy job. (Like I'm telling you something you don't already know!) There are some days it seems like you just get one area cleaned up and two more become disasterized. You come home from the grocery store and someone says, "Did you get toothpaste? We're out." Add in going to college and these task becomes even harder.
Getting and KEEPING your home in order doesn't need to be an all consuming activity. It can't be. You have other demands with your family, job, and college. On the other hand if you just throw your hands up and say, "I give up!", your life will become an endless exercise in looking for your keys, homework, and hairbrushes.
Flylady.net is an excellent site that painlessly puts you on the road to household organization. Flylady offers wonderful strategies to get your house under control (including the laundry!) and then keep it that way. Be warned though...if you sign up for the email reminders you will get about 20 a day. You will get a lot out of the site if you just read it!
To get things under control in a hurry don't be afraid to recruit some help. If your own family isn't enough, ask around. Maybe someone in your neighborhood is starting up a housekeeping business. Maybe you have a 13-year-old niece willing to help on a Saturday to fund her clothing habit. There is no shame in getting a helping hand.
