Student Mom Cooks
I’m not a professional cook – I have not played one on television. I’m just a mom like you and after 22 years of marriage, I have cooked my share of meals. The kitchen can be a place of nutritional joy or a wasteland of food confusion. Add in factors like growing teens, mismatched schedules, and a cook preparing for an economics test and you really have a fiasco on your hands. Getting help with the chore of cooking is important but ultimately, the Mom, is the kitchen manager. You don’t have to do all the cooking but you do have to oversee the process. Approaching cooking as a project opposed to never-ending task, makes kitchen management much easier.
Kitchen stuff you need:
Crock-pot. The newer ones have a warm feature to avoid over cooking your meal.
George Foreman Grill – My kids can cook pretty much anything on this. It's also great to make big grilled sandwiches. Meats and vegetables cook up in a flash. This is a versatile and healthy way to cook.
Sharp knife – You may have to hide it from the kids but a sharp knife, properly handled, is worth its weight in gold. Most “Knife Shop” outlets located in the malls will sharpen your knives for a minimal fee.
Freezer Bags- After years of looking longingly at a food sealer, I bought one. It vaccuum seals and is so handy. If you do not have a food sealer, get some quality freezer bags and a sharpie marker.
Disposable foil bread and cake pans - as you will see in freezer help, this makes freezing so much easier.
Another Great Timesaver! Two of my favorite cooking sites: Food.com and Cheapcooking.com.
